"God created black people, and black people created style." - George C. Wolfe

Without HBCUs, known as Historically Black Colleges & Universities, fashion today would not be same. Growing up watching shows like A Different World not only showcased what an HBCU experience is like, but the way people dressed. Whitley was that GIRL. She always dressed down & you never caught her looking like anything. Fashion is like karma, it always comes back around. What's good STYLRS & welcome back to STYLD 101. Today we will be discussing how HBCU fashion influences the way we dress. Fashion has always been an important factor in HBCU life even back in the 1800s when HBCUs were first starting.

They took pride in their clothing and that's how the trend started. Not many could afford the cost of attending to school so they also used their clothes as a status on campuses. Not only did HBCU students help impact fashion the way it is today, black television & hip-hop in the 90s also played a part. It also kept HBCUs in the conversation & it made black people want to attend. HBCU fashion will never die because the students are the ones who keep it alive. Although dress code may be in the school's policies but it is most definitely enforced by the students. If HBCU fashion dies is it really an HBCU?

It was shows like A Different World who set the standard for HBCU fashion. Being a fashion merchandising major student at the ILLUSTRIOUS Clark Atlanta University, everyday is a fashion show. From the promenade, to the caf on Fried Chicken Wednesdays, class, homecoming, or just in general you are never to be caught slacking. When I came here I fell in love with fashion even more. Seeing different types of styles, how somebody could be wearing the same thing but wear it completely different, watching girls wear heels to their 8AMs with a full beat face. That's the kind of self commitment I need everyday to be extra. Someone wise once said, "Stay ready, so you never have to get ready." Can the church say amen? Amen

Long story short, HBCUs are winning. Thank you guys for tuning in for yet another post.
